Logan's First Science Project!

A few weeks ago Logan's class studied the solar system. They made a little book with a page dedicated to each planet. To wrap up the subject, each kid had to construct a model of their favorite planet and fill out a paper to go with it.

Logan decided to do Uranus. Mom and Dad laughed A LOT during the week the project was under construction and poor Logan just didn't understand why ;o) We spent one evening discussing what should be used for the project, aside from the suggested shoe box to hold the model. Logan's first suggestion was a baseball. We have some soft, foamy baseballs that was left from another craft project. I thought this was a good idea until I looked at them. Too small in my opinion. The following day I took a trip to the local craft store (without child...much easier) to buy foam balls, wire, and outer-space themed scrapbook paper for the box. That evening we set to work. Logan was in charge of painting, which really was a two-person job because...well, he was painting a ball ;o) Then we traced the box to fit the paper for the box and glued that in. That was about all we could do the first night because the foam ball took forever to dry.

The next day Logan wanted to get to work as soon as he got home from school. After a few tries we finally got the "rings" on and worked out a way to hang the planet in the box. Then Logan added some star stickers to the back of the box.

This was the end result.

The big challenge was getting it to school the next day. It was raining...not sprinkling, it was a time-to-build-an-ark rain. And it was really windy. We put it in a big bag and wrapped it up and hoped for the best. It survived!
