First Eye Exam

My little kindergartener has to have three exams to be in the clear for school: vision, dental, and a physical with up-to-date immunizations. Today, we marked the eye exam off our list.

Logan has never been to the eye doctor, except when he went with my on my last exam. I think that really helped him, and it's a good thing that he went with me because we could not find a single book about visiting the eye doctor!

Logan got to wear some pretty cool glasses for the first series of tests. One pair had little frogs on them and had lense that flipped up and down to allow for one eye to be covered at a time. Then, he got to wear a pair of black "Clark Kent"  3-d glasses to look at pictures in a book. Then the doctor came in and did the rest of the exam, which involved Logan looking like a robot :o) Logan did great, especially when it came to reading the letters-upper and lowercase. The doctor told me that there's a lot of kids already in kindergarten, who she sees, who do not know the alphabet.

The only thing we had the slightest problem with was when the doctor went to look in his eyes with the light. He was a little leery of it and thought it was going to poke him in the eye. It took a little time, but she got a good look.

Logan's vision is great! He is a teeny bit far-sighted, but the doctor said that is normal at this age, and most kids outgrow it between ages five and six. I asked her about his squinting and she said that since his eyes tested well, it could be because his eyes are sensative. And blue-eyed people are more light-sensative anyway. I also asked her about him sitting close to the television or holding a book close to his face. She said sometimes they get closer to block out other factors, and you may see it when someone is really engaged in something.

To top off our great visit, the doctor gave him a goodie bag: it was one of those draw-string backpacks, and it had a book, folder with coloring pages, and a box of crayons. Cool!

A Good Start to Summer Vacation

I can't believe that our first month of Summer vacation is almost over! Time passes way too fast these days, and with Logan going to Kindergarten this fall, it seems that the time is passing at an even more excellerated rate!

June has been a good month and Logan and I have kept busy. So has Matt, but it's been a different kind of busy: lots and lots of overtime at work. He has been working six days a week for what seems like forever, so when we get a real weekend around here, it's a big deal.

For the most part, it's just been Logan and I. We took a trip to Champaign earlier this month and went to the Orpheum Children's Museum. It's small as far as museums go, but still pretty fun. Logan loved the big trays of Legos. Unfortunately, it was a very rainy day and he did not get to do the dino dig outside. Then, since we were in Champaign, it was Mommy's play time at the mall and Target :o)

We took our first trip to the pool. This year was nice, because Logan did not need to be followed constantly (Mattoon's pool is HUGE, and no division for little kids and big kids). It was his first time going down the (kiddie) waterslide. At one point he came over to me and said, "Mommy! This is so much fun!" He had a blast, and I had fun talking to some friends who also happened to be there.

Logan and I ventured out to see Madagascar 3. Logan really liked it, mainly because there was a train. It had some funny parts, but for the most part, it put me to sleep. Sometimes I have a hard time watching a kid movie, and this was one of those times. I do plan to take him to see Brave in the coming weeks.

We have read A LOT of books. Logan and I (and maybe Matt...I'm not sure) are participating in our library's summer reading program. At Logan's level, he had to read/be read to for 7 hours. I have to read four books. Both of us have completed our requirments and are now well on our way to earning extra tickets for the Grand Prizes. Speaking of prizes, Logan received prize tower tokens, a Monicals pizza certificate, a Papa Murphy's certificate, a book (yay!) and a metal lunch box. He picked the Star Wars lunch box! I think it would be really awesome if one of us won one of the Grand Prizes: the kids prize is an ice cream maker, and the adults have four different prize baskets, two of which include a Nook. Yeah...I could handle that!

Our t-ball season wraps up this Saturday. It's been a good season, but I'm ready to reclaim my Saturdays. Logan isn't "signed up" for anything else until the end of July (Bible school), so I'm not sure what we will do to pass the time.

Soccer Camp

Logan went to soccer camp this week! It was his first time doing anything related to soccer. He had a lot of fun and told me he wants to play soccer at the Y this fall (or indoor soccer, we'll see).

I was a little worried the first day of the camp. He did fine in the drills part of the camp, but when they moved on to different stations, that's where he had some trouble. They did a game where two guys ran out, around a cone, went for the ball to score a goal. This concept was totally lost on Logan. He would run, but that was about it. I felt bad, because the other kids clearly had it down and he was clueless. Part of me was afraid this would make him not want to come back, but I was wrong. He was having fun.  His favorite drill was when the group would run around in a circle. Then someone would yell "dead squirrel" and they would all fall to the ground. Then, that someone would say "get a nut" and they would hop up and run to get a ball with their feet. My little squirrel is a slow poke...I think he managed to get a ball once or twice lol.

He improved a lot in just the four days of the camp. By the last day he was doing more of the drills, running a little faster, and even started to use some soccer terms. In fact...he told me the "baby headers" were hard. I had to ask him to show me what those were, because I didn't know!  The last mini game they played, he got to be goalie for awhile. He seemed to like that, but he didn't really get the chance to block. And, like in t-ball, he just isn't in there trying to get the ball. It's like he's just along for the ride.
