Pumpkin Patch Trip 2....and 3!
Last week we took yet another trip to the pumpkin patch, this time with our playgroup friends. Then, after lunch, Logan and I went back to the patch for some more fun. I was back and forth on making that second trip, but with Logan being in school on his birthday, this was sort of our "birthday trip," so I am glad I decided to brave the crowd again.

Sixth Birthday Celebration
On Saturday we celebrated Logan's 6th birthday with a Scooby Doo party!
I'm still surprised that it all came down to Scooby Doo and the gang. For the past 9 months or so I was certain Logan would want a Batman birthday party. I was so certain that I pinned numerous Batman/super hero ideas on Pinterest. Of course, he decided that was NOT what he wanted.
First, he suggested Ghostbusters. Cool idea, but I worried about what I could be able to find. Then, he said Harry Potter. As much as I loved this idea, I felt like this was not the right time for it. Finally, he said Scooby Doo. Yeah....I thought. This sounds doable.
So, to Pinterest I went. I found some great ideas. It's a good thing, too, because I found that party decor was lacking in this area. Somewhere in this, I decided I was tired of paying for party decorations, like banners, backgrounds, napkins...stuff like that. Plus, a lot of his parties have followed things he is into, and I've been able to use some of his toys to decorate (this is where the Batman party would have come in). But...we have no Scooby Doo toys except for one tiny Mystery Machine. I decided to just go with colors associated with Scooby Doo: orange, blue, and green. A trip to Dollar Tree (for something unrelated) resulted in me buying several Halloween decorations that could also be used for the party! I was thrilled. Not only would they work for the party, but I could 1) not worry about putting stuff away in a timely manner and 2) be able to use them again! So....score for an October Scooby Doo birthday!

I got pretty frustrated when I could not find a cake idea that I liked. And the ideas that I did like would result in 1) a lot of money and 2) travel time to get said cake. With Friday being a half day of school, and Saturday a noon soccer game (which ended up cancelled due to rain the night before), travel was out. I decided I would just bake a cake and order a cake topper. I ended up baking a cake and 40-plus cupcakes. I really prefer making cupcakes :o) The haunted house cupcake stand I found worked out perfectly with the theme.
The week of the party I had to give in to the fact that the party was going to have to be held indoors, as opposed to our usual backyard party. Fortunately I had a few days to get the house in order, and discovered that it's somewhat less stressful to have a party indoors.
The day of the party Logan and I spent the morning decorating and getting ready. He was soooo excited. He couldn't wait for people to arrive. He had a blast playing with his friends. He covered his ears when we sang (I guess we are pretty bad) and managed to spit-bomb the cake when he blew out the candles. Matt, who took over a lot of party detail once it got going, managed to segregate the spit-cake from the rest. He also got many nice presents and cards!
It was a great day. I cannot believe my little guy is going to be 6!

The Great Pumpkin Patch
On Sunday we took a family trip up to the Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur. It's rare that we make this trip as a family. I think it's only happened three times. Even after Matt's sarcastic remark of "ohhh, it's a pumpkin," he caved. And even though I'm sure he won't admit it, he had a good time :o)
Since these trips usualy involve me and Logan (or me, Logan, and playgroup), we are there during the week and not on the weekend. There's so much more going on during the weekend. There's food, like hot dogs, pulled pork, french fries, pumpkin ice cream, live music, wagon rides. Just a lot more to do. That also means more people. I worried a bit when I saw how many cars were in the parking lot, but once we got in it wasn't bad at all.
The first thing Logan wanted to do was go through the straw maze. We followed him. I'm just not brave enough to send him in there by himself. He's pretty good though...we found our way out pretty quick. Shortly after that Matt ran into some former co-workers and their adorable baby. While talking to them Logan noticed the wagon rides and asked if we could do that. So I paid our fare while Matt noticed another former co-worker already on the wagon!
The wagon ride took us through the giant fields where they grow all the pumpkins. It was pretty informative too. We learned that in the mid 1800s (I think 1850s, but I could be wrong) the land was purchased at $1 per acre! We also learned that despite the drought, it was really great pumpking growing weather. Sadly, the same rule did not apply to the sunflowers, which were pretty tiny and had just bloomed the week before.
Matt decided he wanted to try out this pumpkin ice cream, and Logan wanted one of their awesome sugar cookies, so we went our separate ways for a bit. Matt really liked the ice cream, and while Logan liked his cookie, he was still creeped out by the "spooky man" in the snack shop. The "spooky man" is a life-sized "dummy" that kind of looks like a butler in a haunted house. The more I think about it, he would be perfect for our upcoming Scooby Doo birthday bash...but, no need to terrorize the birthday boy!
After our snacks we headed to the Children's Garden and Logan stood at the pumpkin height chart. We have done the height chart there since he was one, and it's fun to see how much he has grown. THis year was probably the best picture I have of him in front of it...maybe because we had to hurry because everyone else wanted pictures there too.
Since Daddy was with us, Logan decided he was brave enough to go into the haunted barn. He hasn't wanted to go in since he was two. It hasn't changed much since then, and the three of us had fun getting the spooky things to talk (most of them you had to clap or stomp by them). I remember my sister being scared of that barn when she was little...I wonder if I could get her in there now....
I love the pumpkin patch. It's one of my favorite things about fall, and it makes a lovely backdrop for pictures. I didn't have Logan dressed in "picture attire" so I guess we'll just have to try to make another trip!
